-False Assurance of Salvation-
The following is an email I sent to my 16-year old granddaughter, Ellie. She asked for my opinion on a sermon video of Paul Washer, who is a rising star among Southern Baptists. He denounced American Christians who believe they are saved simply because they pray the Sinner¡¯s Prayer yet continue to live lives that are not any different from those of non-Christians. He declared that someone¡¯s salvation must be proved by fruit, based on Matthew 7:13-23.
Ellie was challenged but seemed to be a little confused. I want to share what I wrote her, with some slight revision:
Ellie, I totally agree with Pastor Paul Washer¡¯s message. He seems to be a prophet from God, raised to deliver a sorely needed message for today's American Christians. Having said that, I¡¯d like to add some of my own thoughts.
After listening to his message, your heart must have raced, and you may have made a commitment to walk the narrow path. Then you would fire yourself up to live a Godly life by trying to stop doing what you consider worldly and by keeping all His commandments. But you would fail. Then you would think that it was due to a lack of willpower, so you would double your efforts. And you would fail again. After repeated failures, you would conclude that you are not saved after all and fall into desperation.
Pastor Washer is right. We must prove our salvation by a changed life, but a changed life is not a perfect life. Let me tell you my story. As you may know, I accepted Jesus when I was 30 years old. This is the prayer I offered when I received Him:
"Jesus, I don't think I have the power to live a Christian life. Frankly, I am not sure if I even desire such a life, but I know I am a sinner. I believe you died for my sins. I pray that you enter my life, forgive my sins, and help me become the person you want me to be and live the life you want me to live."
I didn't feel anything, physically or emotionally, when I said this prayer. But as time passed, signs appeared that He really was working in me. I began to see what a sinful person I was, and I truly repented. I started feeling uncomfortable doing things I had done before without reservation, and I had a growing desire to live a life that is pleasing to God.
A changed life begins with the realization that we cannot obey even a single one of God' commands with our own power. And God knows that. When He commands us to do something, it¡¯s actually an invitation to pray that He would enable us to do so, rather than an order. So whenever you come across a command in the Bible, try to suppress the urge to do something. Instead, make it your prayer request, and you will find that He will somehow help you honor His commands.
So if saying the Sinner's Prayer is not a guarantee that you are saved, then what is? If you have the desire to become the person God wants you to be, you constantly offer prayers to become that person, and you see progress in yourself (however little it may be), you can be assured that you are saved.¡±
